چکیده

The landscape pattern of vegetation communities is of fundamental importance to ecologists and biogeographers because it establishes the biotic template upon which largescale ecological processes occur. Landscape vegetation patterns within boreal forests are thought to be driven strongly by abiotic disturbance processes (i.e. fire in uplands, floods in floodplains) coupled with the extremely cold climate of boreal regions (Chapin et al., 2006a,b). Biotic interactions (e.g. competition among plants, herbivore–plant interactions) are usually thought to be most important at the community level of organization (e.g. species composition) and in plant successional patterns (Kielland et al., 2006). Boreal forest floodplains are highly active environments where physical disturbance is frequent and obvious. Influence of disturbance on carbon exchange in a permafrost collapse and adjacent burned forest

[1] We measured CO2 and CH4 exchange from the center of a Sphagnum-dominated permafrost collapse, through an aquatic moat, and into a recently burned black spruce forest on the Tanana River floodplain in interior Alaska. In the anomalously dry growing season of 2004, both the collapse and the surrounding burned area were net sinks for CO2, with a mean daytime net ecosystem exchange of 1.4 mmol ...

A 14,500-year record of landscape change from Okpilak Lake, northeastern Brooks Range, northern Alaska

Analyses of lithology, organic-matter content, magnetic susceptibility, and pollen in a sediment core from Okpilak Lake, located in the northeastern Brooks Range, provide new insights into the history of climate, landscape processes, and vegetation in northern Alaska since 14,500 cal year BP. The late-glacial interval ([11,600 cal year BP) featured sparse vegetation cover and the erosion of min...

Acceleration of vegetation turnover and element cycling by mammalian herbivory in riparian ecosystems

1. We examined the effects of browsing by moose and snowshoe hares on vegetation structure, species composition, plant demography and element cycling in 25 riparian (willow) vegetation stands along the Tanana River, interior Alaska, across a 250-km gradient that represented a fivefold range in moose densities (0.2–1.0 km –2 ). 2. Browsing frequency was much greater in areas with high moose dens...

Shifting Mosaics in Semi-Steppe Rangelands Driven by Interactive Effect of Human Made Disturbances

Semi-steppe rangelands are a complex, highly dynamic and often multi-layered mosaic of grassland, shrubland, and intermediate communities. A few recent studies have explicitly or implicitly developed synthetic hypotheses about how interactive effects of human made disturbances initiate dynamic changes in plant community composition to cause a shifting mosaic of vegetation pattern across the lan...
